Map of United States with New Mexico missingFar too many people who have never lived in the Land of Enchantment realize that New Mexico is a state. And it's not just passing mistakes: CBS News recently said that the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is in Arizona. (It's in Santa Fe.)

In reality, New Mexico is the 47th state, gaining statehood shortly before Arizona was admitted. The Arizona territory, in fact, was split off of the New Mexico territory.

Common misconceptions:

  • "We don't do international shipping."
  • "Don't you need a passport?"
  • "You speak English awfully well. ¿Cómo estás?"

This site is dedicated to coming up with ways American life would be different if New Mexico were never a state in the United States.

Everything on here is purely speculative; of course, I don't have a time machine that can take New Mexico out of the U.S. and see what would happen.
